In the early fall, Trumpeter swans migrate to Sitka Sound from their northern breeding grounds and may stay into late April.  They form tight-knit family bonds with pairs known to mate for life, and adults can typically be found with several cygnets, or juvenile swans. Snow white plumage and a black bill identify an individual as an adult, while soft grey or mauve plumage with a mottled pink bill signifies a juvenile.  Swan families can be seen in the Starragavan Estuary, which provides protection from winter storms, and often they will make short flights to lakes in search of food.
